Best Paul McCartney Quote Ever:

In reference to his father:

"...he used to play trumpet and piano, until his teeth gave out, and then it was just piano."

"C1/C2, F1/F2, C1/C2"

Today, I finally nailed down that "C1/C2 to F1/F2 to C1/C2" transistion at the start of the chorus of Golden Slumbers. Actually, I believe that it's "C2/C3 to F2/F3 to C2/C3" on a real piano, but since I have a five octave keyboard, i have to play it an octave lower to get the sound right.

My mother has a book of Beatles sheet music she lets me use. It contains every Beatles song ever recorded within it's tattered pages (and even a few Lennon solos, I believe; I know for a fact it has Cold Turkey in there, except that's sort of a Yoko song too, but still). I'm alright with reading sheet music, but if it gets too complicated, I can easily become confused. Such is the case with Golden Slumbers, so I'm actually using a YouTube video to learn it.

There are, however, many things in there I do understand, so I've been glancing at a bit of it, maybe learning a measure or two here and there, and am gaining a whole new level of appreciation for The Beatles. The melodies are so simple, so right-in-front-of-you, yet brilliant and so perfect. It really blows my mind at times (no, not because the wind is high).

I've really only been playing the keyboard for half a year now. Although techinally I started to get into it about a year ago (spring of 2006), it wasn't until last December that I really started getting into it, teaching myself notation and the basics of music theory and the like. I'm really not much of a composer yet, although I have come up with a few pieces of straight piano (and recorded a few songs with some dressed-up, soft-synth stuff), but what do you expect after six months?

Music has, in many ways, become my new drug. I've been waking myself up ten minutes earlier in the mornings just so I can get some play time in before school, it's the first thing I do when I get home from school, then I go for a walk, eat dinner, go for another walk and play some more, usually while doing other things, until it's time for bed. At least it's something constructive. Better keyboard than crack, right? (I only do crack on the weekends anyways. Not really, just every other weekend. Not really, just once a month. Yes really! No, I'm not a crackhead.)

I wanted to get underway with an album ASAP, but I think I'll spend the summer (along with the other things I will be doing) learning some more Beatles songs, some more chords, some more everything, and if I think I'm ready, maybe get underway with an album this fall. I think that learning a lot of other music will help me with my own composition woes. I don't want to just limit myself to Beatles music, but with a book full of sheet music and probably just as many videos like the Golden Slumbers one, it will most likely be my main focus, although there are probably videos of other songs, too.

I'm hoping that I might be able to find one of Great Gig in the Sky.
Long live my musical obsession.

EDIT:

This is, by far, the most beautiful cover of "Golden Slumbers" I have ever seen. As an added bonus, there's a bit of "You Never Give Me Your Money" in there.

Do yourself a favor and watch it.
